Installation

Q:Do I need to uninstall my old version first?
A:
It is always recommended to uninstall old versions first. However, it is not a requirement. If there only have been a few small changes between your old and the new version, then you can just install the new version on top of the old version. That should work fine, without any problems. If there have been major changes, then the installer will automatically prompt you that you should uninstall first.
Q:At the beginning of the installation I am asked if I want to uninstall program X. Is that required?
A:
No, that is not required. Simply click 'No' to keep your existing software.
It is however highly recommended to uninstall other codec packs. This to avoid problems and keep your system as clean as possible.
Q:"An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5. Access denied."
A:
This means the installer tries to replace a file that is currently in use by another program.
Close all programs that are active and click on 'retry'. If the same error keeps appearing, then just click on 'ignore' and let the installation continue.
Q:Is it possible to uninstall only a couple components of the K-Lite Codec Pack and keep the rest?
A:
No. You have to uninstall the whole codec pack. Then install it again with only those components selected that you want.
You can however disable (and re-enable) all codecs and filters using the Codec Tweak Tool. This will not uninstall the codecs, but it will effectively disable them.
Q:Is there an uninstaller included?
A:
Yes.
The uninstaller will properly undo all changes that the installer made to your system.
Q:"Error writing to registry key"
A:
This registry error will occur when the security permissions for a registry key are incorrect.
To fix the problem, open the Registry Editor:
Start -> Run -> regedit.exe
In the Registry Editor, navigate to the key that gave the error. Right-click on that key and select 'Permissions'. Then make sure that the Administrators group has 'Full Control'.
Q:What is the difference between the available AVI splitters?
A:
Microsoft:
Has problems playing incomplete and truncated files. This is the recommended splitter for non-broken files because it has the highest compatibility.
Gabest / MPC internal:
This one is able to play most incomplete (partially downloaded) and truncated files. On rare occasions it has trouble parsing a file.
Haali:
Has problems playing (truncated) files that don't contain an AVI index. The advantage of this splitter is that it contains a stream switcher. That is useful for playing AVI files that have multiple audio tracks (which are quite rare) in players that don't contain an audio switcher themselves, such as WMP and Media Center.
Q:What is the last versions that works on Windows 98/ME?
A:
K-Lite Codec Pack 3.4.5
Newer versions might work if you install KernelEx. KernelEx is a compatibility layer to run Windows XP software on Windows 98. Don't expect everything in the pack to work. We no longer support Windows 98 and can't help you if you run into problems. We recommend installing Windows XP instead.
Q:Error during uninstall: "unins000.dat does not exist"
A:
The solution is to install the exact same version of the codec pack that you currently have installed on top of your existing installation. That will recreate the missing file, allowing you to uninstall again.
The system restore function of Windows may cause the file to go missing. System restore should only be used to fix your system in extreme situations, such as BSODs or driver issues. You should never use it to undo changes that can easily be undone otherwise, such as removing software.
Q:Error during uninstall: "unins000.dat is not recognized by this version of the uninstaller"
A:
The solution is to remove the file and then install the exact same version of the codec pack that you currently have installed on top of your existing installation. That will recreate a proper .dat file, allowing you to uninstall.
Q:Does it matter in which order the 32-bit and 64-bit codec pack are installed?
A:
No, the order does not matter. You can install and update the two packs independently.
